Universal Life Insurance in Redondo Beach

Universal life can cover you for life, and you can pay more or less as your situation shifts. We explain how the policy works, what it will cost over the years and where it can fail, and you keep a copy of every page.

What universal life is and who it fits

A universal life policy pays your beneficiary when you die, like any life insurance. The difference is flexibility. You can pay more in good years, less in lean ones, and in many cases adjust the coverage amount later. Part of what you pay builds cash value that earns interest.

That flexibility has a catch. Each month the insurer takes out a cost of insurance charge, and that charge climbs as you age. If the policy is underfunded, the cash value can drain and the coverage can lapse. Plenty of people learn this from a letter in their seventies. We would rather you learn it now.

It tends to fit business owners with uneven income, people who want coverage past age 80, and anyone who has outgrown term life but finds whole life too rigid. If term life or whole life fits you better, we will say so.

What working with us includes

A check of your current coverage
Bring the policies you have now. We go through the statements, write down the cash value, the charges and the age the policy is projected to lapse, and give you our findings on paper.
Illustrations next to each other
An illustration is the insurer's estimate of how a policy will do. We run each one at both the guaranteed and the current rate, so you see the floor and the best case.
Picking the right kind
Guaranteed universal life holds coverage to a set age and builds little cash value. Current-assumption and indexed designs grow more cash value but take on more risk. We explain each in everyday terms.
A premium you can sustain
We build in enough margin to carry the policy through the years when charges go up. We seldom recommend the lowest premium the insurer will take.
Your own copy of everything
Every illustration, application page and signed form goes in a file that stays with you. Years later you can still see what was chosen and the reason.

Signs universal life deserves a look

  • Your term policy is running out

If your term ends soon and you still need coverage, converting or switching to universal life can keep you protected without starting over at an older age.

  • Your income goes up and down

Seasonal or business income makes a fixed premium hard. Universal life lets you pay more when cash is good and ease off when it is tight.

  • You got a lapse warning

A letter saying your old universal life policy may end early is worth acting on fast. We can review it and lay out your choices.

  • You want coverage past 80

Most term policies stop well before that. A guaranteed universal life policy can run to age 95, 100 or beyond.

  • You need to leave money behind for someone

A spouse, a child with special needs or a business partner may depend on that check. Permanent coverage makes sure it is there.

What drives the cost of universal life

Quotes vary because the premium depends on you and on how the policy is designed. Before you commit, we show how each decision changes the figure. The quote costs nothing and includes the illustrations behind it.

Your age and health

Younger and healthier people pay less. Tobacco, blood pressure and past conditions all affect the rate class you land in.

Size of the death benefit

More coverage means a higher premium. Some clients begin with a larger amount and reduce it after a mortgage or business loan is paid off.

Your cash value goals

Paying more than the minimum grows cash value and guards against lapse. Paying only the minimum costs less now but leaves a thinner cushion.

Design and riders

Guaranteed universal life is cheaper than designs aimed at cash growth. Adding a no-lapse guarantee or long-term care benefits raises the premium.

The steps from first call to delivery

  1. 1

    Getting to know you

On the phone we cover who you want to protect, what you can spend and any policies you hold. If you prefer, we can meet at your business in Redondo Beach or Torrance.

  2. 2

    The figures in writing

We gather illustrations from several insurers and go through each line with you. The copies are yours to keep and think about.

  3. 3

    Applying and underwriting

Expect health questions and often a brief paramedical exam. The insurer reviews your prescription and medical records. It generally takes a few weeks, and we update you along the way.

  4. 4

    Delivery and an annual review

Once the policy is issued, we review it with you and file a copy of everything. Every year we go over your statement together to confirm the funding is still on track.

Common questions about universal life

What separates universal life from whole life?

Whole life keeps one premium for life, and its cash value grows on a schedule the insurer guarantees. Universal life lets you adjust your payments and in some cases the coverage amount. Its cash value follows interest rates or an index. You trade some certainty for that freedom.

Could my policy lapse even while I am paying?

It can, if your payments fall behind the monthly charges as they climb. For that reason we fund policies with extra room and go over your statement every year. A no-lapse guarantee rider also helps cover that risk.

Is borrowing from the cash value allowed?

In most cases, yes. Unpaid loans and withdrawals lower the death benefit and can make a lapse more likely. Before you take money out, we show you on paper what it does to the policy.

Should I replace an older universal life policy I own?

Not necessarily. Paying in more or reducing the coverage can sometimes solve the issue at lower cost. We look over the policy first and tell you straight whether keeping, changing or replacing it is the better choice.

Can you help if I live outside Redondo Beach?

Yes. Our clients come from around the South Bay, such as Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo and Hawthorne. Most of the process happens over the phone.
